Mike and I love trying new food. About a year ago, we went to a local Greek-American restaurant, Niko Niko’s, here in Houston. It is always packed with people anytime you pass by. Lines going out the door, difficult parking, you get the picture. Well, we absolutely love the food especially since they sell “budget” lamb. The only thing we can’t figure out is how to eat there or any other Greek restaurant without leaving so stuffed and uncomfortable that we can barely make it home before we fall asleep.

Tonight is a perfect example. We had a very long day and didn’t remember to thaw anything in the freezer. So off we went for Greek food. We shared a small order of hummus with some pita bread (1.5 pitas), shared a half of a greek salad, and then we each ate on a plate of meat – lamb shank for me, gyros meat for Mike. Honestly, the heaviest thing to me would be the hummus but they must put oil or something must expand upon eating it because we both left with stomachs sticking out and feeling very very full. I think next time we will split one plate of meat instead of each getting our own because we didn’t come close to finishing either one but maybe sticking to one will help us feel a tad better. We don’t want to give up Greek food but we can’t seem to figure out the secret to it.

I received my HungryGirl newsletter today and noticed she had 3 pretty tasty looking recipes included.  I wasn’t sure why everything was on a skewer/stick but didn’t really dwell on it.  I thought maybe it was a themed email and I missed the theme in the subject line of the email.  It wasn’t until I got to the very bottom in her factoid box that I saw tomorrow, Saturday, March 28th is National Something on a Stick Day.  Then it made sense.

It is amazing that there are all of these odd national days out there.  I mean who determines what gets a national day?  Can anyone declare a particular day and celebrate it?  Do you have to pass a law to be a national day?  And who in the world comes up with these things?  Just very odd to me.

In any case, there were 3 great recipe ideas in that email and I think I’m going to start with pig on a stick wrapped in a bacon blanket.  It is only 4 weight watcher points and I am so tired of chili cheese dogs.   I might try chicken lollipops or pizza on a stick if the pig recipe works out.

On Wednesdays, I have a few blogs that I always visit for Wordless Wednesday because they usually have some fun and unique photos.  This Wednesday was no different.  The one that caught my eye and peaked my interest was actually photos of a girl and her family tilling the garden and getting ready to replant for summer fruits and vegetables.  She was finishing her canning of sauerkraut to use up the cabbage that was in the garden and then they’d be starting new.  I love sauerkraut and my grandparents had a huge garden that I remember tending to when we would visit so lots of memories were stirred up by that entry.

I’m not sure Mike’s position on a garden but I have a little time before I have to start worrying about that.  We need a house first! LOL  If he doesn’t mind a garden I definetly want to grow cucumbers, lettuce, and carrots.  Carrots are so much fun because you get to dig them out of the ground.  Maybe potatoes too.  I wouldn’t mind a few fruit trees either.  Definetly a small lemon or lime tree and maybe Plum trees if they can be kept small since plums are one of our favorite fruits.

Do you garden? Any tips if you are from south Texas with the summer heat? What are your favorite garden fruits/veggies?

Just wondering if maybe the calendar fairies could stop by and push the calendar forward a few weeks for me. I realize my work is not done yet but I am tired of working late, not going to the gym, and eating really unhealthy food. I have wised up and began bringing lunch AND dinner in order to avoid ordering in every day at work and so I don’t end up eating at 10pm when I am getting home right now. But it is getting old and I am getting tired.

If I bring another lean cuisine or sandwich to work I think I will throw myself out of the window. Anyone have any good recipes?

The holidays are here which means lots of baking and yummy food all around us. I know because I just baked Mike some cookies (I haven’t had a one yet!!) to put in my festive cookie jar. It is really hard to manage to be good and stay on track during the holiday season if on a diet. I am trying to surround myself with healthy treats and try new recipes like the famous diet coke cake and will limit my indulgences for the most part. That said, remember the holidays are not the best time to try new diets and diet pills such as alli as they can reek havoc on your digestive system and can also lead to sabotaging your weight loss goals. So try to limit your intake this holiday and start anew January 1 with your diet plans.
