Books read in January 2011

Posted by: The Blonde Diaries  /  Category: Books

January was an awesome reading month and a great way to kick off the new year.  I received a ton of Kindle books for Christmas and I still had a few books in my desk drawer at work to read and return.  It was so lovely to get through January with a little stress from work but no real pressure or high level stress in the past. It is so nice not to be an auditor anymore.  So let’s get on to it and see what I’ve read! For all books listed just click on the photo of the book and you can order your copy.

This is actually a trilogy by Nora Roberts. It contains the books Daring to Dream, Finding the Dream, and Holding the Dream. I’ve never read Nora Roberts before but boy am I glad I read these three books. Roberts does a really good job developing these characters and weaving them into three books where you learn more and more the more you read. I was so sad when it was over because I could read about these characters forever.  Definitely three books to put on my Kindle Wish List because I want to reread these books again.  Retails on Amazon for under $12.

Daring to Dream
Amidst the grandeur of Templeton House, Margo, Kate, and Laura were brought up like sisters. But it is Margo, the housekeeper’s daughter, whose dreams first take her far away on a magnificent journey full of risk and reward.

Holding the Dream
Kate knew she had something her friends Margo and Laura could never have–a shrewd head for business. But now, faced with professional impropriety, Kate is forced to look deep within herself.

Finding the Dream
Laura seemed to have it all. Beautiful and intelligent, there was nothing that could keep her from her dreams. Until fate took away the man she thought she loved.

This was a book I found by just browsing Amazon one day looking for something new to read. While there weren’t too many reviews on the site for this book, I figured it was worth the chance on it. I mean it is only $0.99 on Amazon for the Kindle edition and the story seemed somewhat interesting. This book was a quick read and was good. Not the best book ever but then again who cares right?! I’ll probable reread it at some point.

Of all the twenty-something women who are hopeless romantics, Ellie Manuel is more “hopeless” than “romantic.” Even after her Prince Charming broke up with her, she just won’t give up … because fairy tale heroines don’t live “happily ever after” right away, silly, they’re tested first! Determined to pass the test, she spends the next year restoring herself to the girl Prince Charming had fallen in love with in the first place. Until she discovers that life without him might not be so bad after all: her career is taking off, her confidence is back, and the cute guy at work is no longer a stranger. So when is it okay to quit on a fairy tale?

This is another Kindle book I found while surfing around Amazon. It was under $3 for the Kindle version so I said why not and put it on my Christmas list. I was so happy when I received this book and started reading it. It was such a darling little read and something I really enjoyed. I highly recommend this book. It reminds me of that episode on the Nanny years ago when they turn Ms. Fine into a proper society woman.

Lucy Ellis moved to the Big Apple to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a fashion designer, but the native Midwesterner has just about had it with the city. A mousy, self-conscious girl trapped in a job at a designer sweatshop, Lucy has been mistreated, road-blocked, and otherwise insulted since her arrival. Overwhelmed by city life, Lucy is about to pack it all in and return home to Minnesota. Then she meets Wyatt.

This book sounded like a hoot. Mystery and comedy all in one. The reviews were good but since this is an independent author I have to admit I was wondering if the rave reviews were planted. So for $3 I gave the Kindle edition a try. If it sucked no big deal, if it was great well then I just got a bargain. After reading this book I felt like I found a real bargain. It was a really fun read and it really kept me on my toes. For the longest time I had no clue who the bad guy was because there were too many wrenches thrown at me but at the end it all made sense. I definitely will reread this one.

There are worse things in life than being dumped at the altar. Like being accused of killing your fake husband in a third world country where you can’t speak the language, for example.

When Lizzie Mancini booked her honeymoon to the secluded Blue Bay Beach Resort on the small Caribbean island of Camus Caye she thought it would be relaxing to spend the week at an isolated couples-only retreat. But that was before she knew she’d be honeymooning sans groom. Touring alone, dining alone, and worst of all, having to explain to the resort’s thirty other guests why she was staying in the bridal suite alone—Lizzie was dreading it. But it still beat the alternative, eight more days hibernating in her empty apartment feeling sorry for herself.

Then Lizzie meets Michael, a gold-chained antiquities dealer who offers to play her husband for the week no strings (or sex) attached. The plan works perfectly until Lizzie spends the night with scuba instructor Jack, and Michael’s body washes up on Blue Bay’s pristine shore. Lizzie becomes Polizia Nationale’s number one suspect and the only way she can prove her innocence is to solve Michael’s murder herself.

After finishing Honeymoon for One I just had to see what else this author has written. I found this book and it sounded cute and I figured the story would be good based on the previous book. Plus it was $3 just like the other book. I really love Cheap Kindle books because it helps me stretch my gift dollars ;)
This book was more chick lit than it was mystery so it showed a different side of the author. The characters were likable and the storyline was good.

When L.A. entertainment lawyer Julie Burns becomes convinced that finding The One is “just a numbers game,” she sets out to increase her numbers by any means necessary. From chance meetings and blind dates to dating services and the wonderful world of the internet, Julie will try anything to meet her man. And in the process, she discovers a secret or two about the single life: Sometimes love sneaks up on you when you least expect it–and even the worst first impressions can have surprising results.

Getting Rid of Bradley was included in the Jennifer Crusie book bundle for the Kindle. I’ve read a couple of her books and liked them well enough that I just couldn’t pass up 5 books for $10. $2 books = awesomeness. This book was really cute and a good read. It is chick lit and a little mystery/suspense but more on the chick lit side. In the end everything is solved and Lucy lives happily ever after.

Lucy Savage is not having a good week. Her cheating husband, Bradley, lobbed the final insult when he stood her up in divorce court. A dye job gone wrong has left her hair green. And someone is trying to kill her. To top it off, sexy cop Zack Warren is certain that the very same man Lucy is trying to wash right out of her hair is the same Bradley he wants to arrest for embezzlement.

When someone shoots at her and then her car blows up, Zack decides she needs twenty-four-hour police protection. Next thing Lucy knows, Zack has moved in to her big Victorian house, making them both sleepless – and not just from things that go bump in the night!

Accidentally Engaged by Mary Carter ~ Book Review

Posted by: The Blonde Diaries  /  Category: Chick Lit
This entry is part 25 of 25 in the series Chick Lit Reviews

I am a sucker for a book with a hot pink cover. If you put a book in a pink cover, 95% of the time I will buy it or read it. I have found though that not all books in a hot pink cover are very good. Nevertheless, when I was walking past the library book shelf, Accidentally Engaged caught my eyes and I had to check it out. Boy am I glad I picked it up and brought it home. This was a hilarious book. It was so good that I am going to start looking for my own copy soon.

Accidentally Engaged is the story of Clair Ivars, a tarot card reader who gets caught in the middle of family drama when a bride and her future sister in law (sil) come in for a reading 2 weeks before the wedding. The SIL tries bribing Clair for a good reading and the bride wants a bad reading so she can bail on the entire thing. Clair decides the bride needs the help more so she give the bad reading and is left to straighten things out when the bride leaves the 3 carat diamond engagement ring behind as well as her fiance’s name and address.

So rather than go on her much needed vacation, Clair heads to the wine estate to return the ring. Along the way we meet the evil future mother in law, the hot gardener with a surprising twist at the end, the jilted groom, and the grandma pulling the wool over the families eyes. We also learn why the bride wants to run away from the wedding – because she is being haunted by a ghost (but not any ghost it is Clair’s grandmother’s ghost!). There is something tugging on Clair though which draws her into the estate and keeps her much longer than she was expecting to stay. You definitely want to find out what all of the twists and turns in this book are as they will really get you laughing and bring a smile to your face. As I said earlier, I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read it again and again.

This review is just my opinion. I was not paid for this review nor did I receive this book for free or at a reduced price other than what bookcloseouts.com was selling it for when I happened to place my last order. :)
