I love my subscriptions to Shape and Self magazines but I don’t like keeping the magazines around all the time once I’ve read them. So instead I have been going through the past year’s worth of magazines and writing down helpful tidbits in a notebook. I’ve come across so many that would be helpful for everyone so I want to start a new series called “Healthy Tips”. These won’t be long posts - mainly just helpful tips and tidbits of information but I hope they will be informative and useful.
The first “Healthy Tip”:
30 minutes of daily, vigorous activity…
is all you need to prevent long-term weight gain, and
you will be more than twice as likely to maintain a steady BMI for 20 years.
When you think about it, 30 minutes is one tv sitcom. Just put a tv in front of your cardio equipment and start working out. You will be so distracted by what’s going on with the tv show you won’t even notice the 30 minutes flying by. So get moving today for a happy and healthier you!

Since my last few posts recently have been health/exercise related I thought this tip might be helpful. Trying to get back into shape after a long break is no fun. Most the time if you do not go about it properly you end up sore and miserable for many days after your initial workout. So instead of trying to come out and go pound for pound with the gym rats who go every day try to take it slower until you build your endurance and muscles up. This tip was from Shape a few months back and has been very helpful to me with my starting and stopping routine.
To get back into exercise:
For 1st two weeks do 1 hour of weight lifting using weight you can lift up to 15 times (do 1 set), additionally do 15-20 minutes of cardio three times a week. After you master these items, build up to longer sessions or more sets.
Good luck and remember anything you do is better than nothing and changes won’t happen over night. Everything is gradual and will be worth it in the end!

It is the weekend and that usually means you might be making your weekly trip to the grocery store. Mike and I go each Sunday. I found this helpful tip the other day in one of my magazines and can I tell you it is so true. When I make a list I don’t stray and pick up junk and run up a huge bill. When I forget my list, I fill up a cart full of junk and run up a huge bill at the grocery store. I hope this helps everyone else stay on target and keep the food budget in check.
Always make a grocery list even on short trips.
Why?
Because shoppers who don’t make a list are more likely to buy high-calorie impulse foods. You should also consider that the brainpower you use to try to remember your list takes away from your ability to resist temptation at the store. eek! So make those lists and stick to them. Your body and your health will thank you!
I loved this tip the other day. I think it came from Shape magazine but I cannot totally remember. I love going to happy hour with my friend Beth - flavored martinis & sushi - but the calories, oh the calories always kill me. So I think I will start using this tip so that I can figure out the best drink for my calorie buck. Hope this helps you too!
Love going to happy hour but hate the calories you consume while being there? Well check out Skinnychef.com! This is a site that give you tips on what to order while at Happy Hour so that you can keep your diet and calorie intake in check.

This has got to be one of the most important tips I have found to date and possibly for the rest of this series. I know I sound like I am getting ahead of myself, but once you read it you will know what I am talking about. Everyday there is at least one story in the news about a person needing CPR. What is frustrating though is trying to find someone that knows CPR or a place that offers classes that are convenient for you to attend to learn yourself. I know I am behind in learning the latest technique and trying to track down a class with my schedule is nearly impossible. Well that is until now:
Learning CPR doesn’t have to be a major ordeal. In fact everyone should take the time to learn the proper technique so you can be prepared. If you can’t find a trainer or don’t have the time bring the CPR class into your home with CPRAnytime.com. This is a DVD kit that teaches you CPR at home. It is $30 per kit.
For $30 I think everyone should be running out to buy this kit. I know I will and I was excited to see this in my Shape magazine a few months back. Spread the word and let everyone you know hear about how easy it is to learn CPR while in their own home.
