Sometimes I am anti-change

Author: The Blonde Diaries  /  Category: General

So last weekend Mike and I made a trip home to visit with my mother and brother as well as to attend the LSU-Auburn football game. While we were there, we went to a local restaurant and ran into an old neighbor of ours. He still lives in the neighborhood but with kids grown and busy lives my mother doesn’t see him or his wife much.

I grew up in a very quiet neighborhood. It was all of 3 streets and all of the streets were dead ends. There was only one entrance/exit to the neighborhood. So you could say we were secluded. It was very safe. My mom and the other moms in the neighborhood would let us run and rip and play all day up and down the streets until it started to get dark. There were no cares or worries. It is exactly how I would want to raise a family of my own.

Change is taking over though and I am sad. I like progress but it is infringing into my childhood home and it makes me sad. The large field that runs parallel to the street I grew up on has been sold and is being cleared out for development. Soon there will be more traffic in the area and another way to go in and out. We will no longer be secluded. To top it off, a pond has already been installed so I think a neighborhood will be going up back there. Normally not an issue but I haven’t seen pond pumps installed to keep the water moving. We already had a mosquito issue back there with all the trees and standing water in the “forest area” but now with a pond I see more mosquitoes and other insects.

Definitely something that I am not looking forward to when I go home and visit. I know it will take about a year for everything to kick in but it still makes me sad to know that my childhood home is changing and I’m not sure that I like it.

I grew up in the same way that you did. And I didn’t think it was possible anymore in this day and age. Until we bought our home where we live now. It is much as you describe your layout growing up. And all the local kids run around willy nilly throughout the summer and weekends. What makes it so safe is that everyone actually knows each other. We care about our neighbors and vice versa. I’m glad we were able to find this little slice of yesteryear just around the corner from the rest of civilization. Hopefully your childhood home will be able to hang on as well.
