Got an old car lying around? Think about donating it

Author: The Blonde Diaries  /  Category: budget, General

Well, I did not outright win the old car/new car battle with Mike last month. Yes, he finally bought a new SUV (a 2008 Chevy Trailblazer) but he didn’t give up his 1994 Isuzu Rodeo. That SUV is still parked at the apartment complex. Before the purchase, Mike was insistent on keeping it around in case of emergency. After we looked at all the paperwork on the Trailblazer we noticed that his warranty covered rental cars in the case of said emergencies. So now I am trying to prod him a little bit towards finding a new home for the older SUV. We thought a family friend wanted it but that fell through.

So now I am trying to discuss the positives towards donating it to charity. Positives being that a charity can sell it for parts and scrap metal and receive money to help fund their work and he can get a tax deduction next year since 2008 has come to a close. I found a pretty cool site earlier today, Charity Dispatch, that operates in many cities in the Northeast and includes things such as Washington DC Car Donations. Basically, you choose the charity and date for pickup and they come out to you within 24/48 hours to pick up your vehicle for donation – running or not. They do all the work for you and all you have to do is pick up the phone or give them a call. If you have an old vehicle just sitting around like we do, give Charity Dispatch a visit and see if you both can help each other.

I like Cars 4 Causes if you are looking to make a car donation. It can be a lot easier than trying to sell it and you should be able to get a tax deduction.

You usually get more money for a vehicle by selling it yourself as opposed to taking the writeoff. Of course, then you have to do the work of listing, cleaning, and selling the vehicle.
