Do alot of animals die at our zoo?
Author: The Blonde Diaries / Category: family, GeneralMike and I have been Houston Zoo members for three years now. As such we have seen quite a few of our furry friends come and go. We realize this is part of the circle of life – birth and death. Often times we joke about how our children will quickly understand the circle of life as we plan on taking them to the zoo monthly just as the two of us do now.
The other day, I received an email from the zoo. Our beloved baby elephant Mac passed away. He was just 2 years old (actually had his official birthday party November 2nd). I forwarded on the email to Mike since he was at work and he said he made a comment to his team mates. One staff asked him the question “Do alot of animals die at our zoo?” which he and I figured we would be hearing in a few years from our children. Well to truthfully answer that question: yes. A lot of animals have died in the past 3 years at our zoo. But, death was not due to mistreatment. Our zoo is a rescue zoo and often takes animals no other zoos or animal sanctuaries want. So we have quite a few abused, very old, and unhealthy animals that are rehabilitated and given some happy moments for the remainder of their lives. So for that we are very proud of our zoo. They do their best to help all of the animals have a safe and happy life no matter how long they are here with us.
I have a very small tribute to our elephant baby Mac. He will be missed by zoo visitors. On a happy note his mom is pregnant again and we should have another baby elephant coming our way in the next year or so.
