I was surprised to learn the other day that most health insurances do not immediately cover your health care if you go out of the country. Rather, in some cases you have to wait until you come back home and then file a claim with your insurance company or you just have to eat the cost which can be substantial. I always believed that my insurance would cover me no matter where I go but apparently it does not. With that said I am now going to have to budget in travel health insurance for Mike and I for our cruise honeymoon vacation next year. There are just too many variables involved where I would not feel comfortable going without extra insurance to cover any need that may arise. So far in my brief (and I mean very brief!) search it does not look too outrageous to pick up the additional insurance - just under $300 for the both of us so it shouldn’t be too big of a deal to tack on to our budget but it’s yet another thing we have to consider. I’d rather spend $300 upfront than be hit up with a huge bill and be unprepared to pay for it later. I hate all of the hidden fees you find when you are planning a trip/vacation/anything! Hopefully there will not be any other surprises before then but I’m sure there will be. We only have a year until we go.
