The family drama that just won’t die
All families have drama. I completely understand that. What I hate though is getting dragged right smack dab into the middle of it. Let me give you a brief synopsis with what is going on right now. Back in November my dad was given a choice at work: be moved into a lower level job or take a job as a manager (same level as he was in) in the technology group and go to England for 6 months on a work project. Well after much discussion he decided on the latter and was told to expect to go in March 2008. Well, British Airways was running a special in May from Houston to London with 2 nights in a nice hotel for just $800/ticket. Not exactly cheap flights but cheaper than I was thinking so we all jumped on them expecting to be able to come for a visit.
Fast forward to March, dad not over in England, no start date in sight, and the fall of the dollar has basically out priced all of us. So Mike and I after running the numbers decide to be responsible and cancel the trip. I communicated to my mom our thoughts and feelings on the matter and thought it was a done deal. Well…. It’s NOT!
That’s right, May 1 my mom and dad are still trying to figure out a way for us all to go because I haven’t officially canceled the flights. So I’m in the middle. On one side my parents want to make this a family trip and have us all go anyway. On the other side I have Mike reminding me of the costs and upset because I’m being wishy washy and my family is pressuring us too much over this. It boils down to non-refundable tickets and Mike and I losing $800 in total over this. Yes its a lot of money but so is being nickel and dimed every where we want to go over there and coming back to a huge credit card bill which both of us have worked hard to avoid now and in the past.
So no matter what I do someone will be mad at me and its not my fault. Ugh! I just want to bury my head in the sand and have it all go away. I don’t like being the bad guy.
